Oncology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of cancer and other benign and malignant tumors. This specialist decides on and administers chemotherapy for malignancy, as well as consults with surgeons and radiotherapists on other treatments for cancer. Oncology is concerned with:

    • The diagnosis of any cancer in a person (pathology)
    • Therapy (e.g. surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other modalities)
    • Follow-up of cancer patients after successful treatment
    • Palliative care of patients with terminal malignancies
Correct diagnosis and management of cancer is of paramount importance. The complete spectrum of cancer conditions is managed in this specialty including:
    • Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma
    • All types of tumors of Head and Neck, Gastrointestinal, Brain, Lung, Urological (Prostate, Urinary Bladder etc.), Gynecological (Cervical, Ovarian etc.), Breast and sarcomas.
Oncologists specialize in managing drug treatments for people with early and advanced cancers that affect the organs, muscles, bones and connective tissue. However, people with some early-stage cancers may be treated with surgery or radiation therapy alone and may not need the care of an oncologist. Today’s advancements in surgical techniques offer many patients less invasive surgery options. Specialized techniques such as laser, Mohs, laparoscopic, or thorascopic surgery may be used to treat cancer.

Oncological emergencies are acute life-threatening conditions in cancer patients either as a result of the malignancy or as a result of its treatment. For example, bleeding is a frequent complication of GI tumors and may result from tumor invasion, treatment response, vessel damage or from systemic processes such as DIC. In such as case, palliative hemostatic radiotherapy can be considered. Hypercalcemia is another most common emergency in cancer patients. Most common tumor types associated with hypercalcemia are breast, kidney and lung cancer, and multiple myeloma, although it also occurs in digestive tumors such as esophageal cancer. Aggressive treatment should be initiated as quickly as possible depending on the severity of the hypercalcemia. On the whole, cancer patients are at increased risk of a wide variation of medical emergencies, either by the effect of the tumor itself or by the antineoplastic treatment. The recognition of these emergencies by clinicians as well as the knowledge of their treatment is critical.
